The Microsoft Silverlight

Today Microsoft released Silverlight for Windows and OS X, with a Linux version arriving soon. Cross-platform support has been promised all along, but it’s still surprising to see it delivered (at least partially) from the start. However, there is an interesting bit of wordplay in the description of Silverlight. A subtle difference between how they refer to Windows and how they refer to OS X. You’ll notice that no definite article is used when referring to Windows, but one is used when referring to Mac OS (which really ought to be “OS X”), making it sound rather ordinary and mundane. It could simply be bad copy, but you’ll never find any Microsoft literature talking about “the Windows” or “the Microsoft OS.” It’s the sort of odd construction one typically finds in beauty pageants.
